Chapter 12

“Well, I thought that went well,” Paige said under her breath as they quickly made their escape from Dorian’s boiling rage.

Arden threw a worried glance behind her shoulder. “Zero to sixty in less than a minute, then boom,” she said still amazed by how quickly Dorian lost her temper.

They slid into Arden’s car and set off for home. The sooner she could put some distance between her and Dorian the better she would feel. Dorian’s anger was so toxic it made her head and her heart hurt.

“I’m glad Jeremy showed up when he did to calm her down,” Paige said. “That kind of rage can’t be good for a person. Although I can understand being angry. I would be too if my sister had been murdered and I found out people were trying to get her murderer released.”

“I would be too but I wonder...”

“What?”

“I was just wondering how close Dorian was with Clarissa?”

“By her reaction, I’d say very.” Paige glanced at her out of the side of her eye. “Why do you ask?”

“There were a few moments there—when she was talking about Clarissa—that I got the feeling she was angry with her sister. She seemed bitter about something.”

“Trust me; I’ve been dealing with Dorian for quite a while now. She’s that way about everything.”

They drove past the lighthouse shaped guardhouse and then up the winding road past the colorful Victorian houses towards their street. As she turned into Paige’s driveway, she noticed Savannah standing on the front porch.

As soon as Savannah saw their car, she trotted down on a pair of sparkly red high heels making Arden wonder how she could possibly run as fast as she could without tripping.

Savannah smiled brightly down at Paige as she leaned on the passenger door. “Just the ladies I want to see. How about we go out for a little snack?”

Paige turned to look at Arden. “I suddenly got a chill up my spine.”

Arden hid a smile.

Savannah drew her face into a pout. “Oh, but darlin’—”

Paige held up a finger. “Don’t but darlin’ me. The last two times you took me out for a little snack, I ended up at a murder scene, then a cemetery.”

“I promise it’s not going to be anything like that. I want to buy a house.”

“I am not hungry so—” Paige did a double take. “You what?”

“I want to buy a house,” Savannah patiently explained before gracefully hopping up into the passenger side door. She lifted her legs up and over, then slid into the back seat. Propping her arms up on their headrests, she leaned forward between them. “I’m willing to pay very handsomely too, and when we’re done, I’m going to treat you both to a nice dinner.”

Paige’s eyes lit up and any suspicion she might have entertained of Savannah’s motivation in asking them to join her immediately vanished. “Is it that new construction out on Horseshoe Boulevard?”

“No,” Savannah said, “I’ve got a little beach house in mind.”

Arden turned around at the cul de sac and continued back down the road towards the main part of town.
